I thought I’d talk about what I think are important lessons from my experience. The first thing I’d like to talk about is what really matters in life. When I was younger, I thought about what I wanted to do and what would be the meaning of life, and I came to the conclusion that what really matters is trying to understand the right questions to ask. The more that we can increase the scope and scale of human consciousness, the better we are able to ask these questions.

Some of you may know that I worked on electric cars at Tesla and with rockets at SpaceX. The goal of Tesla was to show that electric cars can actually be better than gasoline cars. With SpaceX, the goal is to try to advance rocket technology to the point where we could establish life on another planet.

Now, I think this is really important for the long-term survival of humanity. It’s not just about getting to Mars, but about becoming a multi-planet species. This is a fundamental safeguard for the propagation of human consciousness. I think we have a duty to maintain the light of consciousness to make sure it continues into the future.

When starting a company, particularly a technology company, my advice is to focus on creating a product that is really going to make a difference. Don’t just follow trends. Really think about what’s going to affect humanity in a positive way. What are people really going to need? Start with that, and then work backwards to the technology.

The final thing I’d like to say is that you shouldn’t let others define you. Define yourself. Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough. Take risks now. Do something bold. You won’t regret it.
